Tablets and other mobile devices of the future will be powered by Intel's Core M chips, which the company says are faster and more energy-efficient.
The next generation of processors from Intel is called Core M and the chips will reportedly boost CPU speed and graphics in mobile devices for which they are optimized. They will also enable hardware companies to make the devices lighter and much more energy-efficient, an Intel executive announced during a keynote address.
Three Core M SKUs available initially include Intel Core M-5Y10, the 5Y10a and 5y70. The former two operate at 2GHz, while the latter, M-5Y70, was clocked at up to 2.6GHz and supports vPro for enterprise clients.
Manufactured using a 14nm process, Core M will produce 50 percent more CPU power and 40 percent faster graphics performance over the Core i5-4302Y chip introduced last year.
Requiring less power and “consequently power dissipation,” according to India Times, the chip set will have a “fanless design” and lead to lighter devices and longer battery life.
Core M was launched by Kirk Skaugen, Intel’s senior vice president and GM of personal computing, who during a keynote address indicated the chips were for products in three mobile segments: convertibles, ultra portables and tablets. Core M will support Wi-Di 5.0 high-quality audio, and second-generation 802.11ac along with forthcoming wireless docking WiGiG technology.
Intel indicated Core M specs would allow companies to release tablets under 9mm thin, about the measurements of the Apple iPad 2, and that more than 20 products based on the Core M processor will be at market during in time for the 2014 winter holiday season.
“One of the highlights of the keynote was the Llama Mountain reference device that is a 7.2mm tablet that’s only 670 grams, thanks to a motherboard package half the size,” according to India Times, which also reported Intel announced “a $280 software bundle for SMEs called Small Business Program Partners Software Bundle for selected products.”
