Famous friends who paid their respects included Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, and Diane Sawyer. Her daughter Melissa Rivers and grandson Cooper were there, grieving as well. Rivers had throat surgery, but had complications and was put into a medically induced coma. She died at age 81.
Rivers was a trailblazer as one of the first female stand-up comediennes. She broke barriers in a male-dominated field, inspiring other women get into the business. She spoke her mind, with sharp and brassy humor, talking about topics that were often taboo. In addition to comedy, Rivers had a love of plastic surgery and style, and hosted The Fashion Police where she interviewed Hollywood stars and critiqued their outfit choices. Her funeral took place at Temple Emanu-El and was star-studded as she would have wanted it. Rivers once wrote how she wanted her funeral. “I want it to be Hollywood all the way. I don’t want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents.” Many in Hollywood turned out, dressed for the occasion. In addition, there were hundreds of spectators and fans mourning the comedienne.
The mood was emotional, but had joy and humor. Radio host Howard Stern joked, “I hope Joan is somewhere right now chasing Johnny Carson with a baseball bat.” There were performances by Audra McDonald and the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. Rivers funeral was a showbiz affair, as she would have wanted it.
