Women dies from head injury after being hit by falling gargoyle statue

Chicago woman killed by gargoyle that fell off landmark Gothic church on Michigan Avenue.

A 34-year-old Chicago woman was killed Thursday when a gargoyle statue fell off the front of a building and struck her in the head, the AJC.com reports.

The Second Presbyterian Church, constructed in 1874, is located in the city’s South Loop neighborhood. The structure is a registered historic landmark, which has, according to The Huffington Post, failed building inspections on multiple occasions during the past several years.

The building did pass inspection in 2013, that last time building authorities checked it, but cracks and flaking stone on the church’s exterior were documented in inspection reports at that time.

Sara Bean was walking across the street, said witnesses, when the ornamental object fell from about 30 feet above, smashed into her head and then hit the hit the ground. Bean had two children and planned to marry her boyfriend, Lance Johnson, who was with her at the time of the accident, the Huffington Post further explained. She was pronounced dead after being taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Official records indicate the city asked the court to fine the church for building code violations such as holes in the exterior walls of the building, reported RedEyeChicago.

Rev. David Neff, the interim pastor of the church, said Sunday services would be held as usual, sent condolences to the family, but he would not discuss the accident, RedEyeChicago also reported.

Protective scaffolding had already been erected around the church on Friday to prevent further damage and a construction crew was busy repairing the stonework.

City officials and police are conducting an ongoing investigation.
