Meet the latest addition to Apple’s design team.

According to an exclusive new report from Vanity Fair, his name is Marc Newson and he is coming to Apple to join his former collaborator Jonathan Ive – Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design -as part of the company’s design team. Newson, who hails from Sydney, Australia but works in the United Kingdom, is a versatile and well-known industrial designer whose skills have been tapped by major companies ranging from Nike to Ford. He is currently the Creative Director with Qantas Airlines.

The fact that Newson is now making his way to Apple is hardly surprising, and not just because his impressive resume makes him a natural fit with a company that cares as much about design as Apple. Instead, Newson’s arrival at Apple was a foregone conclusion because he and Ive are old friends who have been spending a lot of time together (and undertaking several projects together) over the past year or so.

Last November, Ive and Newson helped U2 frontman Bono pull of a charity event called the Project (RED) auction. The event raised $26.2 million for one of Bono’s favorited charities, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa. And while it was Bono’s star profile that likely made the event such a success, it was Ive and Newson who made it possible for there to actually be an event. The two curated the list of auction items, and according to Vanity Fair, actually made many of the items themselves, including a red cylindrical version of Apple’s own MacBook Pro.

It is not currently clear which projects Newson will be working on. However, most Apple followers are excited about the prospect of the multi-talented Newson teaming up with Ive full time. Ive, of course, is the man credited with the design of the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad.
