Hardworking woman dies while napping between job shifts

A young New Jersey woman passed away, but her death might signal change across the country for millions of Americans earning minimum wage.

Maria Fernandes was the epitome of hard working. Unfortunately though, that hard work might have led to her untimely death at the young age of 32.

On the morning of August 25th, Maria Fernandes was in between her work shifts and headed to her Newark, New Jersey home, according to Fox News. She had just completed one of her three shifts as an employee of Dunkin’ Donuts, and had pulled into a parking lot to take a nap. While napping, it is believed that Fernandes inhaled fumes from a tipped can of gasoline in her trunk, causing her to pass away. She was laid to rest on Friday, September 5th before dozens of mourners

At her funeral, friends and family members talked while Fernandes’ musical hero Michael Jackson played in the background. Fernandes was remembered as being an extremely giving person. In an unfortunate turn of events, Fernandes’ ex-boyfriend and his three sons actually wore the suits that Fernandes bought for them to her funeral, according to Reuters.

While obviously overcome with emotions, guests spoke on how Fernandes did not die in vain, and how her death will hopefully help lead to change for millions of Americans across the country. Friends, family and generous strangers contributed to pay for Fernandes’ funeral arrangements.

Fernandes’ death has been a large talking point in the battle to raise minimum wage across the country. On Thursday, fast food workers in hundreds of cities across the country protested in an effort to get the minimum wage raised from the national average of $7.25 an hour,  to $15 an hour. Fernandes was earning $8.25 per hour at each of her three part-time jobs in different New Jersey cities. Her death is being used as an example of the depths in which countless people have to go in order to just make ends meet.
