Conjoined twins are no strangers to challenging lifestyles. From health difficulties to social stigma, conjoined twins often have to overcome a lot of obstacles. Volunteers at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX hope to make one aspect of their lives easier. ABC 9 KTRE reports that a group of students are designing clothing especially for these twins.
Sharran Parkinson, Department Chair of Design and a Professor in the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University, says she saw news reports about Lubbock natives giving birth to conjoined twins. She then got the idea to do something for them by designing clothes for their girls. In about three months, their daughters Knatalye Hope and Adeline Faith Mata will be surgically separated. Until then, the gifts from this volunteer group may ease their burdens.
Mental Floss reports that the conjoined twins are becoming less rare in modern society. With the advent of medical technologies, these twins are more likely to live and also more likely to be able to be separated without harm. Not too long ago, however, being born as a conjoined twin would have generally meant being on display in a “freak show” to earn a good living.
Though medicine has become advanced enough to care for more of these cases, procedures are still difficult. Huffington Post reports a case of twins joined at the pelvis that were successfully separated. However, the procedure took a team of surgeons 13 hours to complete. Knatalye and Adeline have a good chance of a successful separation, but it will not be easy for them or their families.
