Maroney's lawyers sent "cease and desist" letters to sites using the photos on Tuesday.
Just when the celebrity nude photo scandal couldn’t get any more disturbing, there’s a new twist in the story. Over the weekend, nude photos of more than a hundred female celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, were hacked and posted to the Internet. TMZ has learned that one of the celebrities targeted, Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, is taking new legal action against the photos, claiming that she was underage at the time the photos were taken.
The claim is confusing many of Maroney’s fans, who had believed her earlier tweet that “the fake photos of me are crazy!” TMZ speculates that either the photos must actually be real or that perhaps only portions of the photos actually show Maroney, who turned 18 in December. No matter what the case, the website Porn.com has already removed its copies of the photos. Maroney tweeted late Tuesday a: “shout out to my fans for defending me all day long.”
Initial claims have risen that the photos were obtained thanks to skilled hacking of Apple’s storage system, the ICloud. Both Apple and the FBI have acknowledged they are investigating the possibility of a leak. On Tuesday, Apple released a statement claiming the damage was not due to “any breach in any of Apple’s systems” but instead a result of “a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions.” The FBI has yet to comment on Apple’s latest news.
