Brad Pitt surprised Angelina Jolie with a tribute to her late mother at their wedding

The late Marcheline Bertrand was present in every way possible at the August 23 ceremony.

Every other groom in the world may be getting a bit nervous. People magazine continues to reveal exclusive details about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s August 23rd wedding and the latest news makes Pitt seem even more like a dream husband.

In People’s cover story, Angelina Jolie reveals how they were able to include a dedication to her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, for their wedding at their private estate in France, Chateau Miraval. In a surprise gift to his bride, “Brad had a dedication to [my mother] engraved inside the chapel where we stood,” Jolie explains. The couple also stood on top of a carved tribute to Bertrand while exchanging vows. Finally, Jolie wore a piece of Bertrand’s jewelry to the ceremony.

Bertrand died in 2007 at the age of 56 from ovarian cancer. Jolie has been vocal about how much her mother meant to her, crediting her for inspiring art and philanthropy. While accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Oscar committee in November, Jolie mentioned her mother in her speech, recounting that, “she believed nothing would mean anything if you didn’t lead a life that was of use to others.” Jolie also credited her mother’s long battle with cancer as a reason why she elected to undergo a double mastectomy in May of 2013 upon discovering she carried the recessive BRCA1, which increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer.

Bertrand’s flower ring is visible on People’s cover photo of Jolie in her wedding dress.
