The "Burning Hearts" crooner "will be incredibly missed by all."
Singer Jimi Jamison, who rose to fame as the lead singer of Survivor in the mid- to late-’80s, has died of a heart attack, confirms the Los Angeles Times. He was 63.
Jamison died at his home in Memphis, Tenn. on Sunday, according to his booking agent Sally Irwin.
“We are saddened and heartbroken to announce the passing of a great musician, loving father and grandfather, and overall extraordinary, giving, and kindhearted human being,” said a post published on Monday evening, to Jamison’s official Facebook page.
In the ’80s, Jamison fronted Survivor, replacing the band’s original lead singer, David Bickler, who left the band with voice issues.
Jamison had big shoes to fill. Survivor was enjoying a wave of success following the smash hit “Eye of the Tiger” that was featured in Rocky III.
The singer understood his task.
“An average or a good album wouldn’t be enough,” said Jamison, in an interview that occurred after the release of Rocky III. “The band needed a great album and some huge hit singles.”
Jamison’s biggest hits with Survivor include “Burning Hearts” from Rocky IV and “The Moment of Truth” from The Karate Kid. He also sang the theme song to the hit show Baywatch.
Before joining Survivor, he performed in metal bands, including the Memphis-based band Target, for a number of years. He later commented that he preferred singing ballads to fronting metal acts, citing the stress on his voice.
“He’s loved by so many, most of all his family, and he will be incredibly missed by all,” continued the Facebook post. “Thank you all for your condolences and kind words.”
