Two casinos set to close in Atlantic City

Labor Day weekend will be very grim in Atlantic City for more than 5,000 people preparing to lose their jobs.

A weekend that is usually associated with gambling and fun times will have a much more somber mood this year in one New Jersey city.

According to the Taipei Times, more than 5,000 people are set to lose their jobs this Labor Day weekend, as two casinos in Atlantic City are preparing to close. The closing of the casinosĀ Showboat and Revel comes in response to a continuous fall in revenue for the casino industry in Atlantic City. Since 2006, revenue for casinos has fallen nearly in half, from $5.2 billion to $2.86 billion as of last year.

After starting off the year with a total of 12 casinos, Atlantic City will end the year with just eight, after the closing of the two casinos this weekend, and the closing of Trump Plaza in the middle of September. Another casino, Atlantic Club, was also closed in January.

The closing of these casinos is two-fold according to analysts and the mayor of the city. For one, it is supposed to help increase profit for the remaining casinos, and according to Mayor Don Guardian, it also a way for the city to remake itself and become known for more than just the casinos and gambling.

By the time Trump Plaza closes, a total of 8,000 people will have lost their jobs due to the four casinos going out of business this year. That is a quarter of the city’s total workforce. But eliminating some of the casinos in a city that is known for its gambling atmosphere is seen as a way to increase profit for a struggling market and ultimately help the city become more well-rounded.
