"Guardians of the Galaxy" are still on a mission to become the first film to gross the $300 million mark this year making them the #1 movie this summer.
It has largely been acclaimed this summer was a very disappointing one for Hollywood movies and although it is coming to an end, “Guardians of the Galaxy” are still on a mission to become the first film to gross the $300 million mark this year.
It was reported the Marvel Studios blockbuster brought in an estimated $16.3 million over the first three days of the Labor Day weekend upon its release. It has now since grossed $274.6 million domestically and over $547 million worldwide. With no major releases on Friday the Marvel movie maintains an excellent chance of keeping the number one slot for three straight weeks- its fourth week overall.
Paramount Pictures’ own summer hit, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” found another $11.7 million over the three-day weekend for $162.4 million to date. TMNT will only reach around $190 million allowing the Marvel movie to stay in the number one slot.
“If I Stay” came in at number 3 grossing an estimated $9.2 million for $29.8 million in only 10 days. This Chloe Grace Moretz drama reportedly only cost roughly $11 million providing one of the few brights spots for Warner Bros. this summer.
“Let’s Be Cops!” remained in the top five for another weekend as it grossed $8.2 million for $57.2 million so far. The Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson comedy could now end up with upwards of $75 million when everything is all said and done.
Although some of these movies this summer were highly anticipated movie goers have agreed this summer was a weak summer for Hollywood blockbusters. “Guardians of the Galaxy” was amongst the few that stood out to viewers and maintains the ability to gross $300 million this year.
