University of Montana students are grieving the loss of a student who passed away as the result of a single-car accident while on his way to campus to start fall classes.
Lucius Robbi went missing Tuesday, Aug. 19, after which police conducted an extensive 10-day search including remote regions of Idaho and Montana until the body of the 21-year-old was found late Thursday.
The car had plummeted off a 60-food embankment off Highway 21 near the turnoff for Stanley Lake, Idaho, according to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office as reported by the Missoulian.
Custer County Coroner Vicki Armbruster said Robbi died on impact as the result of blunt force trauma to the head.
A helicopter spotted the brightly colored kayak secured atop Robbi’s Subaru amidst thick brush and trees.
It is not known what may have caused the accident; However, officials say rain and thunderstorms had occurred around the same time Robbi would have had the accident. The rain washed away any tracks that would have been left behind, hindering the police from finding him.
Robbi was first reported missing after he did not attend orientation at the University of Montana Aug. 20.
Tina Glaessner, the mother of Lucius Robbi, posted to the Facebook page dedicated to the search for her son just before midnight Thursday after discovering what had happened to her son, saying “The family of Lucius Robbi wants to thank all of the many friends who came together to search for him. … We are touched as well by the support of so many who did not even know our family, but showed their humanity and tremendous generosity at such a difficult time through countless acts of kindness.”
Searcher Holly Hayes was the first to post to the same group to say Robbi’s body had been found. She posted just an hour before Robbi’s mother, saying, “my heart goes out to all who had the pleasure of knowing him and to all those who have been touched by him.”
University of Michigan paid its respects to Robbi on Friday at noon.
Robbi was from Orleans, California, and worked for Cascade Raft and Kayak in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho over the summer. He was coming to UM from Horseshoe Bend on Aug. 19.
