Tax forms could create new problem for HealthCare.gov, delay tax refunds

Form 1095-A is used to report certain information to the IRS about family members who enroll in a qualified health plan through the Marketplace.

For those who spent hours, days or even weeks trying to obtain health coverage via the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, this is probably the last news they wanted to read: According to a report from The Associated Press, people who successfully signed up for Obamacare will need a tax form from their insurance exchange before their 2014 tax return can be filed.

The form, which is called 1095-A, looks like this. And, according to The AP, tax professionals are concerned that HealthCare.gov, which struggled to handle the loads of people trying to sign up for Obamacare, will have trouble getting this form out to the almost five million people who have received healthcare subsidies via the website.

Unfortunately, the forms are required for these individuals.

“Form 1095-A is used to report certain information to the IRS about family members who enroll in a qualified health plan through the Marketplace,” the Instructions for Form 1095-A read. “Form 1095-A also is furnished to individuals to allow them to claim the premium tax credit, to reconcile the credit on their returns with advance payments of the premium tax credit (advance credit payments), and to file an accurate tax return.”

What happens if the forms aren’t given to their recipients on time? According to the instructions, Form 1095-A must be furnished to individuals on or before January 31, 2015 and, as noted by The AP, a delay of a week or two could mean that people depending on a tax refund to pay bills may have to delay their payments.
