Dell's Alienware has announced a refresh to its classic Area-51 gaming computer, featuring a radical new design and top-of-the-line specs.
Dell’s Alienware has announced a new version of its Area-51 gaming computer, boasting a full makeover both outside and inside the computer. This is the first time that the Area-51 computer has been reworked since 2010.
The first thing to notice about the new computer is the new design – it looks nothing like the original. Dell is calling the new design “Triad,” and while it certainly does look cool, its not just for looks.
According to Alienware, the new design offers a number of advantages. The first is that it is much more efficient when it comes to cooling. Instead of blowing hot air horizontally out of the computer, which could then hit a wall and not be blown away at all, the air is blown upwards and away from the computer. Another advantage is the fact that it allows for easy access to things like USB ports and network connectivity ports.
“It features an angled, easily accessible front I/O panel and hassle-free grips that make it simple to pivot your system forward to reach rear ports,” says the Alienware description of the computer. “Vast and open entryways on each side are designed to provide an easy way for you to perform upgrades, brainstorm new mods, or show off your rig.”
While the computers design is great, its what’s under the hood that really sets this rig apart. The Area-51 makes use of Intel’s newly announced Core i7 Haswell-E processors, which come in either six-core or eight-core variants. It also offers up to 32GB of 2133 DDR4 RAM, with support for up to three graphics cards. Users can choose from either Nvidia or AMD graphics cards.
The computer includes ports for up to two standard hard drives and two solid state drives. Each Area-51 system will also be overclocked and liquid-cooled to allow for maximum performance.
The Area-51 computer will ship in the U.S. starting in October, and worldwide sometime during the holiday season.
