Instagram released a new app this week that allows users to record high-quality time lapse videos even while in motion. “Hyperlapse” employs cutting-edge video stabilization technology, giving its user-generated, handheld time-lapses a cinematic feel previously only possible with expensive equipment.
“From documenting your whole commute in seconds or the preparation of your dinner from start to finish to capturing an entire sunset as it unfolds, we’re thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks,” Instagram said in a blog post.
Time lapse photography is a technique in which frames are played back at a faster rate than originally captured. This method can produce mesmerizing sequences, such as the display of an entire sunset in 15 seconds. A hyperlapse is a specific type of time lapse where the camera is also moving.
“Capturing hyperlapses has traditionally been a laborious process that involves meticulous planning, a variety of camera mounts and professional video editing software,” Instagram engineer Alex Karpenko wrote in a blog post. “With Hyperlapse, our goal was to simplify this process.”
To this end, Instagram’s software designers modified the “Cinema” video stabilization algorithm, already used in Instagram video. Cinema utilizes the phone’s built-in gyroscope to measure and remove unwanted hand shake.
“We modified the Cinema algorithm to compute orientations only for the frames we keep,” said Karpenko. “As a result, we are able to output a smooth camera motion even when the unstabilized input video becomes increasingly shaky at higher time lapse amounts.”
