Apple’s iWatch announcement likely months away

A consensus is developing among Apple prognosticators that the Cupertino company will not launch its wearable game-changer next month.

As per usual around this time of year, Apple gave notice to media and select VIPs to attend an event on Sept. 9 at its California campus. At the event, the company that Steve Jobs built is presumably going to unveil an iPhone 6 with a larger screen than its five predecessors. TMZ even obtained a few photos of the new smartphone. The biggest buzz, however, has been around the rumored debut of the Apple iWatch, a nearly mythical device – or “vaporware,” as Computerworld jokingly calls it.

With blog buzz tempering off as of late, it appears the iWatch will remain a myth – at least through the holiday season. According to ComputerWorld, the iWatch is “at least five months away, even though Apple is expected to unveil its iOS smartwatch (software) next month.”

With the uncertainty over the iWatch, blogging on the topic has become a free-for-all of jokes at the expense of fellow bloggers. ComputerWorld highlighted some of the back-and-forth, which included Jared Newman questioning John Paczkowski’s reporting that the iWatch would be announced Sept. 9.

Newman wrote: “Why announce in in September, then? We can only speculate, but keep in mind that the last time Apple entered a new product category with the iPad, there was a three month gap between the announcement and the launch. That gave Apple time to ramp up production without worrying about the rumor mill, and it gave developers time to prepare new apps for the larger display.”

Credence to the 2015 release theory was given by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this month with a report – also speculation itself – that the iWatch would debut in early 2015.

Perhaps the most pragmatic commentary came from Ken Segall, who suggested that Apple is unlikely to introduce two new products at the same time. “No truly revolutionary product in Apple’s history has ever been launched alongside another,” he writes. “It’s a waste of marvel. [And] is it realistic to get people digging into their pockets for an iPhone 6, and then, on the very same day, tell them they need to spend another $300-400 on the iWatch?”
