Positive HIV test shuts down LA porn industry

This is the first HIV scare in the adult film industry in 2014.

Free Speech Coalition (FSC), advocacy group for the adult film industry, has called for a halt in filming after an actor tested positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Tech Times reports that the moratorium is a precautionary measure while FSC can conduct additional testing on the unnamed actor as well as others who were involved in sexual acts with the actor. The primary goal is to ensure that other adult film performers are kept safe from infection.

Last year, around the same time, National Monitor reported that the pornographic film industry issued a moratorium on filming in Southern California after porn star Cameron Bay tested positive for HIV. At that time, the FSC Executive Director issued a statement that that the group did not believe Bay was infected on set. Still, WTSP Channel 10 News reported that porn actors with HIV became advocates for the use of condoms on set to further protect performers.

In 2010, Derrick Burts, previously known only as Patient Zeta to protect his identity, came forward to speak out against the practices of the porn industry, according to the Los Angeles Times.  Burts tested negative for HIV in September 2010 and performed as a crossover actor in both heterosexual and homosexual productions.  In October, he was HIV-positive.

In 2012, a Los Angeles non-profit organization, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), was successful in getting a bill passed that requires an adult industry performer to use a condom during filming. Under the law, studios that film porn films without the performers using a condom can face civil charges, but it has never been imposed. This is the first HIV scare in the adult film industry in 2014.
