Former 'Voice' judge enters no contest plea two years after woman accused him of drugging her in downtown Los Angeles.
After being accused of “slipping” ecstasy into a 33-year-old woman’s drink at the Wokcano restaurant in downtown Los Angeles in Jul. 2012, former Voice judge Cee Lo Green officially avoided jail time by pleading no contest to the felony count of furnishing a controlled substance in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday. The Gnarls Barkley frontman has now been sentenced to three years’ formal probation, 360 hours of community service and ordered to complete 52 Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
Police began to investigate the case immediately after the unnamed woman reported to authorities that Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Calloway, drugged her drink as they dined together. She went on to claim that she woke up naked with the singer in a hotel room after consuming the drink, but a lack of evidence found after two rounds of investigations by the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division led to prosecutors declining to file any sex-related charges against Green. Blair Berk, Green’s attorney, described the interaction between Green and the woman as “consensual relations.”
A law enforcement source told the Daily News on Friday that the woman allegedly recorded Green making reference to the drugging incident in a later conversation. However, his no contest plea to the felony conviction allows him to continue to deny wrongdoing.
“I plead no contest where I maintain my innocence,” Green said in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday, where he appeared wearing a pinstriped shirt over dark shorts and dress shoes. He put on a pair of sunglasses as he walked out of the courtroom without comment.
In addition to the probation, community service and Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous attendance requirements, Superior Court Judge Mark Young also sentenced the Grammy winner to pay restitution to his unidentified female victim.
Green will return to court in Mar. 2015 for a progress report.
