Is Tony Soprano dead? Creator David Chase says quote was ‘misconstrued’

Chase had previously refused to answer such a question.

Iconic television show The Sopranos ended seven years ago but apparently its fans are still fully invested. On Wednesday morning, Vox ran a article on Sopranos’ creator, David Chase, which seemingly included a new revelation about the series’ famous and controversial last scene, where the screen went black, ending the show without revealing if mob boss Tony Soprano lived or died. Author Martha P. Nochimson asked Chase if Tony was dead and reported that Chase “shook his head ‘no.’ And he said simply, ‘no he isn’t.’”

As CNN reports, Chase had previously refused to answer such a question, stating that it was unnecessary for viewers to know Tony’s final fate. Many fans did not share this view, and took the news to heart, rejoicing in finally knowing the character was alive and well—at least within HBO’s television universe.

Unfortunately for them, the reprieve has been short-lived. Chase released a statement later Wednesday through a representative. The statement reads that Nochimson “misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of The Sopranos raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.”

Fans can now continue their speculations.
