Sofia Vergara slams ‘ridiculous’ backlash over so-called ‘sexist’ 2014 Emmys moment

The Modern Family actress blasted reports the gag was sexist or demeaning.

It wouldn’t be an awards show without some controversy. The 66th Annual Emmys aired on Monday night and the internet is buzzing about one particular moment. Fox News reports that during the telecast, the president of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Bruce Rosenbloom led Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara onto a pedestal on stage. She proceeded to be twirled around as a “visual distraction” to Rosenbloom’s speech, which was focused on the Academy’s community works and educational efforts.

The social media backlash was instant and fierce, with viewers raging that Vergara was being objectified and used only for her body. Vergara blasted the critics to Entertainment Weekly behind the scenes when she was asked if the skit was demeaning, replying, “It’s absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it’s ridiculous that somebody started this—I know who she was—who has no sense of humor.”

While it is unclear who was the “she” Vergara referred to, the backlash hardly seems limited to one person, with many viewers pointing to the incident as a symbol of bigger problems with the television industry as a whole. The Huffington Post pointed out “this very troubling turn” occurred on a night where only 26% of the nominees were women. Jezebel said Vergara was treated “like a literal object” and reminded readers that Stephen Colbert accepted his award by semi-apologizing for employing only one female on his writing staff.
