Belgian photographer knocked unconscious after firefighting aircraft dumps 400 gallons on his head for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The “Strike Out ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” began to raise awareness and money for the ALS Association, but social media has quickly turned it into a popular internet fad in which participants aim to find amusing ways to dump freezing water on themselves. Bruno Brokken, a 51-year-old Belgian photographer living in Catalonia, was taken to a hospital in Spain on Tuesday after he tried to make his daring attempt at the challenge one for the record books.

Brokken had a friend’s firefighting plane dump 400 gallons of water on him for the challenge, and was knocked to the ground unconscious after the load of water was discharged above his head. The stunt took place at the Empuriabrava Aerodome in northeastern Spain, where Brokken participates in a skydiving club. A lifelong daredevil, Brokken has done over 15,000 jumps in the last 20 years.

Paramedics were quickly called into the airfield and transferred Brokken to the Josep Trueta Hospital via air ambulance. His condition was initially described as “critical,” but Brokken’s friends are now saying that hasn’t suffered any internal injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

“He is awake now and he is improving. He has no serious injury and we expect him to be discharged soon,” said a spokesman for Skydive Empuriabrava.

“They had arranged to do it as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge craze,” said Rolf Kuratle, head of Skydive Empuriabrava. “The pilot flew a firefighting plane, the kind used to put out forest fires, and dumped the load onto his friend. They obviously miscalculated how much water it was.”

Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have opened an investigation into the incident, since the aircraft used in the stunt is solely meant to fight forest fires for Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture.

So far, the Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon has raised over $79.7 million for the ALS Foundation.
