FX network picks up Zach Galifianakis and Louis C.K. clown comedy

The series will have a 10-episode inaugural season, which begins shooting next year.

Louis C.K. has been a mainstay at FX with his comedy Louie, which has aired since 2010, winning two Emmys for writing. Now, he’s getting ready to join forces with Zach Galifianakis for a new half-hour comedy about an aspiring clown.

The network has given its go-ahead to the series Baskets, which is co-written by the two comedians and director Jonathan Krisel, who is best known for his work on the IFC series Portlandia.

The show is centered around Chip Baskets, the character played by Galifianakis. Baskets is a man pursing his dream of becoming a successful clown. When he fails to get accepted at a prestigious clown school in Paris, he has no choice but to become a rodeo clown instead.

The series will have a 10-episode inaugural season, which begins shooting next year. Eric Schrier, president of original programming for FX, praised his network’s new show and the team behind it.

“Zach Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel have created an absolutely brilliant show,” said Schrier. “To say Zach’s portrayal of the lead character Chip Baskets is hilarious/unique/riveting/fascinating would be an understatement. We can’t wait for the world to meet him.”

Galifianakis and C.K. will serve as the show’s executive producers, while Krisel, who directed the pilot, will be showrunner.

Baskets is the first project to come from C.K.’s production shingle Pig Newton Inc., which inked an overall deal with the FX network back in December. The series joins a comedy lineup on the channel that already features Louie, Archer, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst, and Married.

Galifianakis is certainly no stranger to television, having appeared in the HBO series Bored to Death, Comedy Central’s Kroll Show, and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job, on Adult Swim.

The new series Baskets is set to premiere on FX in 2016.
