The U.S. Army conducted a flight test of the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon from the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska on Monday. Seconds after launch, the rocket carrying the weapon exploded.
Due to an anomaly, testers terminated the rocket to ensure public safety, according to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Defense. There were no injuries to any personnel on the ground.

“It came back down on the range complex,” Maureen Schumann, Office of the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, told The Associated Press. “Fortunately, no people on the ground were injured. There was damage, but I’m not sure of the extent of it at this time.”
Schumann noted that the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon will allow the U.S. “to engage any target anywhere in the world in less than an hour.”
