Matt Damon dumps toilet water on his head for ALS

Toilet water in westernized nations, says Damon, is much cleaner than the drinking water found in third world countries.

The ice bucket challenge may be the hottest thing on the Internet at the moment, but actor Matt Damon put his own unique twist on the popular trend – he used toilet water.

Damon was challenged by his friends Jimmy Kimmel and Ben Affleck to complete the task, which requires participants to donate to ALS (amytrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research or pour a bucket of ice water over their heads, within 24 hours of being called upon.

But the popular challenge, which has raised over $70 million dollars thus far, posed a challenge of its own to the actor. He wanted to contribute to a good cause, but didn’t want good, clean water to go to waste. It seems rather fitting, considering that Damon is a co-founder of Water.org, a non-profit organization whose main objective is to provide clean drinking water and sanitation solutions to nearly one billion people worldwide who live in regions where access is severely limited.

So the actor decided to use toilet water for his challenge. He then uploaded the video to his charity’s official YouTube channel.

“It posed kind of a problem for me, not only because there’s a drought here in California,” explained Damon. “But because I co-founded Water.org, and we envision the day when everybody has access to a clean drink of water, and there are about 800 million people in the world who don’t — and so dumping a clean bucket of water on my head seemed a little crazy.”

According to Damon, toilet water in westernized nations is much cleaner than the drinking water found in third world countries and underdeveloped regions across the globe.

Upon completing his challenge, the actor nominated George Clooney, Bono, and NFL quarterback Tom Brady to do the same. No word yet on what type of water they plan on using.
