The scene at the Brooklyn Bridge got quite exciting on Sunday when a 24-year-old male bypassed a security gate and began walking up the beam that leads to one of the bridge's tower.
What are the criminal charges for climbing the Brooklyn Bridge? Would the charge be for trespassing? Reckless endangerment? Some other crime? Evidently, police are not certain, either.
According to a report from the New York Daily News, the scene at the Brooklyn Bridge got quite exciting on Sunday when a 24-year-old male bypassed a security gate and began walking up the beam that leads to one of the bridge’s towers. The man proceeded to climb up to the tower – the Brooklyn tower, on the Brooklyn side of the bridge – and take pictures from the top. When he was done, he made his way back down calmly.
When he returned to the base of the beam, the man was greeted by a whole slew of police officers, who placed him under arrest and took him into custody. Charges are currently “pending” in the case, but it would be safe to bet that the charges will have something to do with all of the law enforcement that had to be needlessly summoned because of the 24-year-old male and his reckless actions.
Indeed, the law enforcement response to the young man’s simple jaunt up the bridge beam was extensive. Once police sources noticed the man jumping the security great and climbing up the bridge, they summoned a veritable army of reinforcements, including “patrol, aviation, harbor and emergency services,” according to the NY Daily News piece.
The incident was not the first time in 2014 that someone has climbed up the Brooklyn Bridge without permission. Less than a month ago, a pair of German artists climbed both of the bridge’s towers in the middle of the night, removing the American flags situated at the top of each, and replacing them with blank white flags. The artists have also not yet been charged, though their actions convinced police that the bridge could use a bit more security
