Why Sin City 2 bombed in the box office

Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For failed to bring audiences into theatres.

Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For failed to bring audiences into theatres. The sequel to Sin City disappointed at the box office. It has a highly anticipated film starring Jessica Alba, Eva Green, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It also received mixed reviews from critics. Meanwhile, the science fiction flick Guardians of the Galaxy held steadfast with moviegoers.

Sin City is based upon graphic novels of the same name by Frank Miller. Published by Dark Horse Comics, it has several intertwining stories based in the fictional Basin City, known as Sin City. Many of the police are corrupt and the city is plagued by crime. The film Sin City released in 2005 was a neo-noir action thriller. It was mostly in black and white, and used a digital backlot to create a unique visual look. With an intricate story line and a strong cast, the film achieved critical and commercial success, and was considered a landmark in film-making.

Though the sequel also had a good cast, it failed to live up to expectations. Some theories for the flop are that it was too long between films and Sin City 2 was too similar to the first movie. It has been 9 years between films, and there was criticism that the material was lackluster. It is a big loss for the Weinstein Company and Dimension films.

The neo-noir movie was originally supposed to be released in October 2013. Perhaps it would have done better at the box office if it opened on that date. Sin City 2 debuted at $6.5 million, and had a budget estimated between $60-70 million. Despite the sequel failing to deliver, Miller and Rodriguez are planning for a Sin City 3. Audiences will have to wait and see if a third film delivers well.
