Reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ may lead to risky behavior in young women, study finds

The study is among the first to examine the relationship between health risks and reading popular fiction regarding violence among women.

Reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” is more likely to cause signs of eating disorders and to have a verbally abusive partner among young adult women, a new study finds. The study, led by a researcher from Michigan State University, also suggests that women who read all three books in the series are at a heightened risk of participating in binge drinking and of having several sex partners.

These behaviors are known risks associated with being an abusive relationship, as with Anastasia, the lead character in “Fifty Shades,” explained the study’s lead investigator, Amy Bonomi. She also notes that although the study did not indicate whether women exhibited these health behaviors prior to or after reading the book, either way is potentially problematic.

Bonomi said in a statement, “If women experienced adverse health behaviors such as disordered eating first, reading ‘Fifty Shades’ might reaffirm those experiences and potentially aggravate related trauma.” She continued, “Likewise, if they read ‘Fifty Shades’ before experiencing the health behaviors seen in our study, it’s possible the books influenced the onset of these behaviors.”

The study, which appears in the Journal of Women’s Health, is among the first to examine the relationship between health risks and reading popular fiction regarding violence among women. Previous research has linked viewing violent TV programs to violence and antisocial behaviors in the real world, in addition to reading glamour magazines and becoming obsessed with body image.

According to domesticabuseshelter.org, one out of every three women will be abused at some point in her life.
