British singer Cliff Richard under investigation for alleged sex crime

The veteran singer is accused of an incident involving an underaged boy at a religious event almost 30 years ago.

A sex crime investigation involving an underage boy has landed Singer Cliff Richard in the hot seat with police.

Police have launched an investigation into the allegations of a sexual nature dating back to the 1980s. It’s said to be related to an incident with a 16-year-old boy that may have happened after a rally held by US preacher Billy Graham in Sheffield section of South Yorkshire, England. Richard, 73, has denied any wrongdoing.

Officers had searched his house earlier this month in connection to the allegations. Broadcast network BBC had cameras on the scene as the search took place. According to the Daily Mail, the police chief leading the investigation into Sir Cliff accused the BBC of a ‘cover-up’ over how its journalists learned the star’s property would be searched. The Corporation has received 762 complaints over its live coverage of the incident. The BBC has refused to reveal its source, but says it did not find out from police.

The singer’s spokesperson said that he voluntarily met with police. He was interviewed under caution, and was not arrested or charged, according to a police statement.

Richard, born Harry Webb, is one of Britain’s longest-serving entertainers. He is known for his hit songs like Living Doll and Devil Woman. In his earlier days, he was often called Britain’s Elvis Presley. With his backing group The Shadows, Richard was one of Britain’s most successful performers in the pre-Beatles era of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Richard was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1995, and is known for his clean-living, Christian lifestyle.

Police have said their investigation is in its early stages.
