AMD launches new mid-range graphics card, bundles it with video games

The new Radeon R9 285 is a mid-range graphics card that will have the power to display the most recent PC games "in maximum detail."

AMD celebrated “30 years of graphics” on Saturday, marking the occasion with a live webcast that featured the announcement of a brand new graphics card. According to a report from Digital Trends, the new Radeon R9 285 is a mid-range graphics card that will have the power to display the most recent PC games “in maximum detail.”

The R9 285 is the successor for Radeon’s R9 280 card, and will trump its predecessor in numerous ways. On one hand, the power draw for the new card is supposed to be 250 watts – 60 watts higher than the R9 280 and all of the other cards in the R9 line. The card will also boast 3.29 teraFLOPS of computing and will use 2GB of memory to keep performance quick and snappy. In addition, several third-party manufacturers will supposedly be building versions of the R9 285 with 4 gigs of RAM.

Not everything about the R9 285 has changed, however. While the specs for the card are a significant improvement over the R9 280, the new card will still boast all of the same ports as its predecessor, making it easily compatible with the same systems. A display port, an HDMI port, and a pair of DVI outputs are all included.

AMD clearly wants to sell the Radeon R9 285 graphics card almost singularly to hardcore PC gamers. That much is evident from the fact that the company will be bundling the card with new video game titles when it officially goes on sale on September 2. One of those titles is Alien: Isolation, a licensed title that acts as a sequel of sorts to the popular Alien film series. The game is graphically impressive and made quite a splash at the E3 gaming convention this summer.

The list price for the card is $249.
