Legendary action star and anti-drug ambassador Jackie Chan issues statement regarding son's arrest.
Since Chinese President Xi Jinping initiated a crackdown on illegal drugs in June, more than 7,800 people in Beijing alone. One of the latest individuals to become detained in Beijing on drug charges is none other than Jaycee Chan, the 31-year-old son of legendary action star Jackie Chan.
A celebrity in his own right, Jaycee Chan has appeared in some 20 films and is a singer and multi-instrumentalist. He and Taiwanese film star Kai Ko were reportedly detained last Thursday, after police found that both actors tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug. To make matters worse, 100 grams of marijuana were taken from Chan’s home. Jaycee is accused of aiding and abetting other drug users, an offense which carries a maximum sentence of three years of imprisonment.
Jackie Chan, who was named by Beijing as an anti-drug ambassador in 2009, issued a public apology for his son’s actions on Wednesday.
“Regarding this issue with my son Jaycee, I feel very angry and very shocked. As a public figure, I’m very ashamed. As a father, I’m heartbroken,” Chan wrote on Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter. “Jaycee and I together express our deep apology to society and the public.”
“I have failed to educate my son. I must also take responsibility, and in my son’s name take a deep bow and apologize to the public. I hope all young people will learn a lesson from Jaycee and stay far from the harm of drugs. I say to Jaycee that you have to accept the consequences when you do something wrong. As your father, I’m going to face the road together with you.”
Local media reported this week that Jackie Chan and Ko’s father both flew to Beijing to check on their sons.
