Jaycee Chan, the 31 year old son of international action movie icon Jackie Chan, was arrested in Beijing last Thursday under suspicion of drug-related offenses.

He’s just the latest celebrity to be caught in a nationwide crackdown on drugs that has been swift and far-reaching all across China.

Chan was taken in along with Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, and both were charged when authorities found 100 grams of marijuana in the actor’s home. They each tested positive for the drug and confessed to having used it shortly thereafter.

The nationwide effort to eliminate drug use from the culture is a result of a marked increase in the use of recreational drugs such as ketamine, methamphetamine and Ecstasy throughout the mainland. A recent declaration by Chinese President Xi Jinping that illegal narcotics were destroying the country and that offenders deserved swift and serious punishment sparked an intensive effort to suppress their use and distribution.

Chan’s arrest comes just days after the announcement of an agreement by 42 different entertainment agencies to boycott any celebrities who are caught using or selling illicit drugs. Jaycee Chan’s management company, M’Stones International, publicly apologized for their client’s behavior via written statement on their website, promising to “supervise his rehabilitation and help him return to the right path.”

Ko’s representatives, Star Ritz Productions, also apologized to the public after the actor himself appeared on television in a tearful plea for forgiveness from friends, family, and fans.

Jaycee’s father, Jackie, one of the most recognized movie stars throughout the world, has yet to make any kind of formal statement. But he has distanced himself from his son in the past, stating that his child would not stand to inherit any of his fortune when he passes away. More recently however, the elder Chan has stated that some of his parenting decisions in the past have been irresponsible and he would be more supportive of his offspring.

It appears this would be the perfect opportunity to put his reformed parenting skills to work.
