Livestrong donates enormous sum to cancer research

The University of Texas has surpassed their funding goals thanks to this donation and can now secure the future of their plans for innovative cancer research.

LIVESTRONG has donated $50 million to the University of Texas to help fund the new school facilities that will establish the cancer institutes the university plans to build.

The donation was received as part of the Campaign for Texas, which has strived to gather $3 billion dollars in funding over the last eight years. LIVESTRONG’s contributions have officially pushed the total of funds collected to $3.04 billion, just days before the campaign’s end.

The Austin based university plans to invest the money into creating the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes, which will operate alongside the Dell Medical School. The goals of the Institutes are to promote better research, provide better educations and develop a more inclusive model of care for cancer patients. A central component to these goals is the incorporation of current patients and cancer survivors.

“Imagine a program designed for patients and survivors by patients and survivors,” said LIVESTRONG Foundation CEO, Doug Ulman. Ulman himself is a cancer survivor. He says that this partnership is the product of 17 years of planning.

University of Texas in Austin President Bill Powers said in a statement, ““The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will bring to the Dell Medical School the cause of patient-centered care that has been at the heart of the foundation’s work since its beginning 17 years ago.”

The money donated by the LIVESTRONG foundation will be distributed over the next decade.

Dell Medical School plans on beginning enrollment for the first class in 2016. The Seton Medical Center will open in 2017 and serve as the teaching hospital for the Institutes.

Both the school and the medical center will work to develop a care plan that is centered on the patient in a way unrealized before now. They will also work to drive future research within the university as a way to enhance care for and understanding of the disease.
