Previews are set to begin October 5 with an opening night planned for a month later.
If you have ever wondered how Cuban-born singing sensation Gloria Estefan achieved super-stardom, a new musical bound for Broadway in 2015 will likely have all the answers for you.
On Your Feet! tells the story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and their metoric rise to the top of the charts in the 80’s, detailing her time as part of the group Miami Sound Machine and then as a solo act who would dominate the music landscape throughout the decade.
The musical is set for a Chicago trial run from June 2 to July 15, 2015, before eventually moving on to the Marquis Theatre on Broadway. Previews are slated to begin on October 5 with an opening night set for the following month.
The production will not actually be starring the Estefans, but will still include a number of classic hits such as “Conga,” “1-2-3,” and, of course, “Rhythm is Gonna Get You.” The couple will also be writing new songs specifically for the show. Jerry Mitchell, director of Kinky Boots, which won six Tony Awards including Best Musical this past year, is on board to direct the Broadway production.
No casting decisions have been announced as of yet, but the production crew has already announced intentions to launch an open casting call via YouTube submissions, as well as auditions in New York and in the Estefans’ native city of Miami on September 9 and September 21. Interested hopefuls are being asked to submit videos of themselves singing Gloria Estefan songs in English, in Spanish, or in both languages if possible.
This so-called “jukebox” Broadway show based on Gloria Estefan is just the latest in a long line of similar productions that have become popular along the Great White Way. Biographies of performers as diverse as Carole King, Frankie Valli, Billy Joel, and even Fela Kuti have all opened over the past ten years.
