Ebola infected U.S. missionary reunites with husband

Husband and wife were separated by isolation glass, but that did not stop their emotional reunion.

Nancy Writebol, a U.S. missionary infected with the Ebola virus while providing aid in West Africa, was reunited with her husband on Sunday.

The reunion took place in Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where Writebol is recovering from the deadly virus. Though still contained within the isolation chamber, she was able to once again see her husband, David’s, face. The two greeted each other with tears of joy.

“I have had the great joy to be able to look through the isolation room glass and see my beautiful wife again,” David said. “She is continuing to slowly gain strength, eager for the day when the barriers separating us are set aside, and we can simply hold each other.”

Before he could see his wife, David had to undergo 21 days of quarantine in Charlotte, N.C. to monitor his own health and temperature. Once it was clear that he had not contracted Ebola, he was able to make the trip to Atlanta to see Nancy.

Writebol was evacuated from Liberia and transported to Emory University Hospital on Aug. 5 after it was confirmed that she had become infected with the virus. She was only a few days behind Kent Brantly, the other American diagnosed with Ebola after volunteering aid in West Africa.

Both she and Brantly received doses of an experimental drug, ZMapp, before being evacuated from Liberia.

Writebol is standing and smiling, according to her husband.

Brantly said in a statement that he is recovering and hopes to be able to reunite with his own family soon.
