Renovo Motors unveiled its flagship Renovo Coupe all-electric supercar at Pebble Beach this week.
If it looks like a Shelby, it must be a Shelby, right? Wrong.
Renovo Motors may have borrowed the classic muscle car’s chassis from the legendary auto customization and racing house, but what’s under the hood is entirely state-of-the-art.
The all-electric Renovo Coupe was put on display in Pebble Beach in California as part of its four-year old Silicon Valley based company’s “coming out party,” according to reports.
The rear-drive Renovo Coupe is powered by two electric motors that, combined, generate an astounding 500 mph, enabling the supercar to produce gaudy numbers usually associated with Lamborghini, Ferrari or Corvette: 0 to 60 acceleration in 3.4 seconds, full throttle response time of 37 milliseconds and top speed of 129 mph. The supercar’s 1,000 lb.-ft. torque places it in an elite performance category.
The Renovo supercar does carry a hefty price of $529,000, which USA Today’s Chris Woodyard points out is “about five times the price tag of the original Tesla Roadster.”
However, the Renovo Coupe, with its Shelby modified chassis, looks distinct. Powered by two lithium-ion batteries instead of a gasoline V8, weighing in at a compact 3,250 pounds, it’s truly a different breed of beast.
The brainchild of two San Francisco Bay Area tech veterans with an affinity for classic American cars, Renovo Motors is four years old and has been largely operating in stealth, according to car enthusiast website Jalopnik.
Their first car features proprietary, patent-pending batteries that charge and discharge faster than similar batteries in other electric vehicles.
“Production is slated to begin in the first quarter of next year in Silicon Valley, with deliveries happening a few months later,” according to Jalopnik. The cars will be limited to “small batches” with “sales will be limited to the West Coast before Renovo goes nationwide.”
