Gene Simmons apologizes for crude comments after boycott threatened

Gene Simmons of KISS apologizes for harsh comments about people with depression.

Gene Simmons of KISS has never been one to hold his tongue, but perhaps he should have thought before he spoke just this one time. The legendary entertainer made headlines after making crude comments about depression, which in the wake of Robin Williams death this past week, came back to haunt him.

According to reports, Gene Simmons spoke boldly about his disdain for those who suffer from depression in an interview July 31. He apparently said that anyone who has a dark cloud hanging over them should just go and kill them themselves. Those are harsh words, even for Simmons.

“I don’t get along with anybody who’s a drug addict and has a dark cloud over their head and sees themselves as a victim…For a putz 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I’m depressed, I live in Seattle.’ F–k you, then kill yourself,” Simmons said in an interview with SongFacts.

Obviously at the time those words probably hadn’t reached many people. Songfacts is a rather obscure publication compared with other media outlets. However, now that Robin Williams has passed away, it seems like depression has been brought to the forefront, dragging Simmons words to the frontline with it. The criticism and possible boycott of KISS as a whole by radio stations, forced Simmons to issue an apology for his unkind words.

“I sincerely apologize to those who were offended by my comments. I recognize that depression is very serious and very sad when it happens to anyone, especially loved ones,” Simmons said on Facebook, according to Spin Magazine.

While is it all good and well that Simmons took responsibility for his words, that doesn’t change the fact that he said them and most likely, they represent how he feels about those who suffer from depression. His apology may quiet some but will everyone accept it and move on? That’s unlikely. This time, Simmons may have gone just a little too far.
