“Downtown Abbey” water bottle scandal ends up helping worthy cause

The show's "water bottle-gate" has helped bring awareness to an organization that helps bring clean water to the less fortunate.

The cast of Downton Abbey has turned this weekend’s historical mix-up (now dubbed, “Water bottle-gate”) into an opportunity to help people around the world.

Earlier this week, the show released promotional photos for its fifth season. One photo received an extensive amount of online attention for having a modern-day water bottle on the mantle behind the characters Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael).

The problem? The show takes place in the 1920s; plastic water bottles weren’t used until 1947.

The cast responded to the fans’ corrections by posting a photo to the show’s Instagram with everyone holding water bottles. The photo aimed to promote Wateraid, a UK charity that works to bring clean water to those who do not have it. The reason for the picture hitting the internet is explained in the caption: “The official photograph of The Earl and Lady Edith was cropped and used during the launch of the new season, but it was when an un-cropped version of the image worked its way onto the internet that it sparked a global press frenzy.”

“How fantastic that the attention created over one water bottle ends up benefiting some of the world’s poorest communities through access to safe, clean water today,” Barbara Frost, Chief Executive of WaterAid. told MTV, “Every pound and penny WaterAid receives will be matched by the UK Government, which means we can reach twice as many people with desperately needed clean water and sanitation.”

The photo has been removed from the PBS’s site, the network that airs the show in the United States. The fifth season of Abbey airs in the States in January 2015.
