California woman licked by giraffe after climbing over fence at zoo

Hall told police she climbed the enclosure because she "loves giraffes."

Have you ever wondered what could happen to you if you climbed over a fence at a zoo to pet the animals? A California woman recently did just that, climbing into a griaffe enclosure at a Madison, Wisconsin zoo. She was licked and kicked in the face by a young giraffe, and was then cited and fined $686 by police.

According to the City of Madison Police Department, Amanda Hall, 24, climbed over one fence to the giraffe enclosure at the Henry Villas Zoo and was partially through a second fence when Wally, a 2-year-old, 12-foot-tall giraffe, licked Hall’s face, then quickly changed tune and kicked her in the face.

Hall told police she climbed the enclosure because she “loves giraffes.”

She suffered non-life-threatening injuries; however, Zoo staff say she was lucky to have avoided lethal injuries. The staff told police that giraffes are capable of killing lions.

She was fined $686 for harassing zoo animals.

Wally and his fellow giraffe, 5-year-old Eddie, came to the zoo last spring after Henry Vilas Zoo’s previous giraffes were returned to the Minnesota Zoo, according to a news release.

Wally and Eddie are reticulated giraffes, a term describing the pattern of its spots: brown, even-sided, and box-shaped with white lines in between, according to the release. Each giraffe has a unique pattern of spots just as a human has unique fingerprints.

According to the Henry Vilas Zoo website, the zoo is free, a decision instated by the founders of the zoo, which was originally a park. The park opened in 1905 and the first animal exhibits within the park in 1911.
