The couple's arrest “no doubt saved young children from future abuse.”
Stephen Howells II, 39, and Nicole Vaisey, 25, of Hermon, N.Y., kidnapped two Amish sisters from Oswegatchie, N. Y. and took them about 30 miles where they were found 8 p. m. Thursday. They were arrested Friday.
They were charged with planning to physically harm or sexually abuse the two girls, say authorities. They face two counts of first-degree kidnapping, according to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain reported by the Daily News.
The girls were picked up from the sisters’ family roadside food stand around 7 p. m. Wednesday and were taken to the hamlet of Richville.
Rain says now “the girls are home, they were checked out at the hospital last night. They are fine.”
The girls are Fannie Miller, 12, and Delila Miller, 7. Rain says they were “extremely” instrumental in the arrest of Howells and Vaisey.
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said the couple’s arrest “no doubt saved young children from future abuse.”
Vaisey and Howells were taken into custody around 8:30 p. m. Friday after voluntarily coming in for an interview at the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. Rain would not say whether they had admitted to the crime.
Authorities are searching the house where the girls were taken at 1380 County Route 21 in Hermon, trying to learn where the girls were kept during the 24 hours before they were found.
According to ABC News, the girls were dropped off on the side of the road and walked to the home of Jeff and Pam Stinson, who had bought produce form the girls’ parents.
The Stinsons fed the girls grape juice and watermelon, which they ate heartily.
“They ate that watermelon in 30 seconds. It was fast,” said Jeff Stinson.
“There is no one else involved that we know of,” said Rain.
Howells and Vaisey face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
