Governor Chris Christie delivered a different message to beachgoers in Asbury Park, from the one he delivered in 2011, by promoting the last few weeks of the summer shore season even as Hurricane Irene approached.

In 2011, Gov. Chris Christie warned the beachgoers that time was running out. Christie had told beach-goers,

“Get the hell off the Beach in Asbury Park and get out. You’re done. It’s 4:30 PM. You’ve maximized your tan. Get off the beach. Get in you cars and get out of those areas.”

Christie referred to his earlier warning amid laughs from the crowd that gathered to see the governor.

“A couple of years ago I told you to get the hell off the beach,”

“It was the people in Asbury Park who caused me to say: ‘A hurricane was coming and you damn people were still sitting on the beach putting sunscreen on yourselves.’ But that’s the spirit of this state.”

He and state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin discussed how the Army Corps of Engineers spent $345 million since Hurricane Sandy rocked the state, as part of a billion dollar plan to restore the state’s shore.

“The entire Jersey Shore is what makes New Jersey so special,” Christie said. “While Sandy may have had other ideas, the Jersey Shore and Asbury Park have come back and they have come back stronger than ever.”

The Governor also answered questions on his travels as chairman of the Republican Governors Association to Christie’s social media spat with commuters who say he should have never nixed the ARC tunnel project to New York.

Christie declined to say whether he’ll hold immigration talks during his upcoming visit to Mexico. Christie, who’s slated to lead a three-day trade mission to Mexico beginning Sept. 3, said the main objective for the trip is economics, not immigration.

The trip will take Christie to Mexico City and will include meetings with New Jersey and Mexican business leaders and executives.

Christie declined to provide additional details of the trip Friday.
