Looting resumes in Ferguson, Missouri.
The right to peaceful assembly gave way to a violent atmosphere of looting, tear gas, and destruction in the small Midwest town of Ferguson, Missouri. The town was shaken by the shooting death of a young community member, Michael Brown, last weekend, reports USA TODAY.
After several days of angry protests targeting police, frustration had seemingly given way to calm, until police reports released on Friday ignited another round of looting.
Burned buildings and shattered glass paint the scenery of a chaotic protest after newly released information infuriated community members to the point of anarchy. While police threatened to arrest protesters who came near their vehicles, authorities did nothing to stop the looting of local businesses.
“We didn’t have any supervision so people got super out of hand,” said Derrick Robinson, 30, of Ferguson, according to USA Today. “I was very disappointed and upset about what was going on.”
On Friday, police identified seven-year veteran, Darren Wilson, as the officer who shot Brown. Police also released footage of the convenience store where Brown allegedly committed a robbery.
The report claims Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, were suspected of a “strong-armed” robbery in which $49 worth of cigars were stolen from the store.
Many protesters believe the strategic release of information defends the officer while condemning the victim.
