Damon Dash sues director Lee Daniels for $25 million

The hip hop mogul seeks financial retribution for unpaid loans and denied producer credits.

Roc-A-fella Records co-founder Damon Dash is suing The Butler director Lee Daniels for $25 million, according to New York Daily News.

The hip hop businessman filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday.

In the lawsuit, Dash’s lawyer, Natraj Bhushan, alleges that Daniels owes Dash money for investments he made in six of the director’s movies. In addition, Bhushan claims that Daniels denied Dash his owed executive producer credits in these films, including The Butler, Precious and The Paper Boy.

Dash’s lawyer estimates that the hip hop mogul invested nearly $2 million into Daniels’ films, none of which he’s seen repaid, despite The Butler earning an estimated $100 million.

Dash did indeed receive a producer credit for 2004’s The Woodsman and 2005’s Shadowboxer — but these are the only movies, despite Dash’s claims that he was a producer of many more.

“He never received money that Mr. Daniels promised him,” said Dash’s lawyer.

Dash is also suing Shadowboxer producer Simone Sheffield of Canyon Entertainment for $1 million in a separate lawsuit.

The hip hop mogul made his money — roughly $50 million — from starting Roc-A-fella Records with rapper Jay Z, then later selling his half to the “99 Problems” performer.

He is believed to have spent most of his money and be deeply in debt.

Representatives for director Lee Daniels have declined to comment on Damon Dash’s $25 million lawsuit.
