Martin Lawrence says ‘Bad Boys III’ is “getting close”

Eleven years after 'Bad Boys II' hit theaters, Lawrence confirms a sequel is in development.

Ever since Martin Lawrence celebrated the 11-year anniversary of his film Bad Boys II on Twitter last month and teased the highly-anticipated third chapter to the franchise, fans have demanding updates on the progress of Bad Boys III. During his appearance on Conan on TBS Wednesday night, the 49-year-old actor confirmed that the film is in fact in development, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and co-star Will Smith will both likely be returning.

Lawrence played officer Marcus Burnett, who was partner to Will Smith’s Mike Lowrey, in 1995’s Bad Boys and 2003’s Bad Boys II. Speculation about a follow-up film began last July, when Lawrence tweeted, “11 years ago today, #BadBoysII was released in theaters. Feelin’ it’s about time for #3… what do you think Will? pic.twitter.com/gVnEK3j27T.” The comedian used his time on Conan last night to update fans on the status of the film.

“I just talked to [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday and he said it’s real, they’re working on the script, they’re getting close, and it all looks good,” said Lawrence.

Conan O’Brien quickly asked if he could have a walk-on role in the film, and Lawrence said it is a definite possibility. “I will mention it to Will Smith and Jerry Bruckheimer that Conan wants a cameo. We wanna cast you in it. You know what you could play? A crooked cop on crack.”

“Yes! I think I was born to play that,” joked O’Brien.

While Lawrence never outright said Smith will reprise his role in the film,
Bruckheimer said earlier this year how important it is to get Smith for Bad Boys III, no matter how difficult that may be.

“It’s so funny because we’ll get Sony real excited to make the movie, and then Will is off doing two movies. And then, Will will come back and be real excited about it, and Sony will say, ‘Well, maybe it’s not the time for this.’ And then, Ride Along came out and was a big hit, and now they’re all excited to make the movie, but Will is off doing something else. It’s just trying to get everybody together to make it,” the producer told Collider. “But, we’re working on the script. We have a lot of faith and hope that we’ll do it.”
