Affleck fires back at fans who doubt he will make a good Dark Knight.
After the negative reaction from comic book fans to his 2003 superhero film Daredevil, Ben Affleck has grown accustomed to people doubting his ability as an actor. Batman enthusiasts have been expressing their outrage for months over the 41-year-old being cast as the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but Affleck is refusing to let their opinions affect his performance.
When EW asked Affleck about the superhero epic that he is now halfway through filming, he made sure to make it clear how seriously he is taking the highly-anticipated role.
“It’s a process that I’ll probably have better perspective on when I’m done,” said Affleck. “Batman’s obviously got a set of expectations that are tough. So I spent a lot of time working out.”
When asked about the fan backlash that has taken over the Internet regarding Snyder’s decision to cast him in the film, Affleck stated that he tries to just trust in the film’s creative support system.
“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I wouldn’t have taken the part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking. I think Chris Terrio wrote a terrific script. Zack’s a great visual director. And there’s an interesting take. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think I could do it. I have the benefit of a lot of that understanding. But also, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That’s a big part of this international sport.”
Snyder made sure to reassure viewers that Affleck will make a great Batman when he announced the casting decision on August 22, 2013.
“[Affleck] has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.”
