This year's New York Film Festival will be filled with returning directors, big name actors, and world premieres.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced the full 30-film lineup for the 52nd New York Film Festival, revealing that several filmmakers who had works accepted by the festival in the past have been invited to screen new works this year. Attendees will also be treated to a number of the most highly-anticipated films from the 67th Cannes Film Festival last May, including Sony Classics’ Foxcatcher, for which Bennett Miller earned best director, and Alice Rohrwacher’s Italian Grand Prix award-winner The Wonders.
The world premiere of David Fincher’s Gone Girl will act as this year’s opening night film. The world premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice will be the 52nd New York Film Festival’s centerpiece film on Oct. 4, and the U.S. premiere of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman will be the closing night film on Oct. 12. During the festival’s 17-day run, 27 other titles will also be featured.
Award-winning actors such as Willem Dafoe, Kristen Stewart, Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell all have films in the festival, and the David Cronenberg film which earned A-lister Julianne Moore a best actress nod, Maps to the Stars, will also be coming to the Big Apple. Renowned international actors such as Italy’s Asia Argento and France’s Mathieu Amalric will be making their American directorial debut at this year’s New York Film Festival after successful debuts at Cannes. Among the New York-based filmmakers who will have works at the fest are Oren Moverman, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of 2009’s The Messenger, Josh and Benny Safdie, and Alex Ross Perry, whose film Listen Up Philip received a warm reception at Sundance.
This is the New York Film Festival’s second year under the oversight of Kent Jones. He joined Film Society of Lincoln Center director of programming Dennis Lim, senior programming advisor Marian Masone, Film Comment editor-in-chief Gavin Smith, and Film Comment and Sight & Sound contributing editor Amy Taubin in this year’s selection committee.
