‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sountrack reaches No. 1 spot on weekly Billboard Top 200

While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy in the box office, the soundtrack for Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster is now sitting comfortably in the top spot of the weekly US. Billboard chart. According to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” sold an impressive 109,000 copies in its second week.

Fans and critics alike have given praise for how perfectly the Guardians soundtrack was worked into the film, with the throwback songs playing through rebellious hero Peter Quill’s vintage Walkman as he fights to protect the galaxy from intergalactic villains. “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” debuted on the chart at No. 3, selling 60,000 copies in its first week. The 12-track 1970s-style retro mix continued to climb in popularity in its second week, overtaking the 51st installment of the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” franchise to take No. 1. Filled with classic hits like The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream,” the Guardians soundtrack is the second film soundtrack to top the album chart in 2014 – the soundtrack for Disney’s animated film FrozenĀ was on the Billboard Top 200 for over three months, and spent the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack sinceĀ Titanic‘s 16 straight weeks in 1998.

Godsmack’s “1000hp” debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, selling 58,000 copies, and Spoon’s “They Want My Soul” debuted at No. 4. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers latest album, “Hypnotic Eye,” dropped from the top spot to No. 6 this week. Total album sales reached 4.27 million this week, down 9 percent from a comparable week last year. Year-to-date album sales totaled 146.4 million in the week ending Aug. 10, which Billboard states is down 14 percent from this same period in 2013.
