The 26-year-old actress said that "at times [the eating disorder] has forced me to starve myself, to run extra miles, to abuse my body."
Girls star Zosia Mamet recently revealed that she struggles with an eating disorder.
According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Mamet is one of as many as 24 million people in the U.S. who suffer from an eating disorder.
“I’ve struggled with an eating disorder since I was a child,” Mamet wrote in her monthly column for Glamour magazine’s September issue. “This struggle has been mostly a private one, a war nobody knew was raging inside me. I tried to fight it alone for a long time. And I nearly died.”
The 26-year-old actress added that “at times [the eating disorder] has forced me to starve myself, to run extra miles, to abuse my body.”
Fortunately, Mamet’s family was there to help save her. Zosia recalled that her father came home one night and told her, “You’re not allowed to die.” She said that it was the first time she understand that this struggle wasn’t just about her.
“Today I’m at a healthy weight, though I realize that my obsession will always be with me in some way,” she wrote.
