Two dozen people rescued from Maryland Six Flags roller coaster after being stranded for hours

Two dozen people have been rescued from the Joker's Jinx roller coaster at Six Flags in Upper Marlboro, MD, Sunday evening.

Two dozen people have been rescued from the Joker’s Jinx roller coaster at Six Flags in Upper Marlboro, MD, Sunday evening, according to Prince George’s County Fire Department.

A Six Flags spokesperson says the coaster stopped near the top of the 79-foot-tall coaster. The passengers were on a curve tilting to their right at a rather steep angle toward that 45 degree drop. The Prince George’s County Fire Department responded to this accident.

The 24 people consisted of seven children and 17 adults, according to the fire department. None were hurt, according to the Six Flags spokesperson.

The ride stopped at around 2 p.m. Sunday according to ABC 7 newscaster Stephen Tschida, and some would not be rescued until five hours later.

At 4:55 p.m., almost three hours after the incident began, the riders were still being removed. At 6:40 p.m. 14 riders had been rescued, and all had been rescued by 7 p.m., 5 hours after the ride first stopped. Tschida, who was at the scene, says that the day was hot, and Prince County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said that a few passengers had back pain, cramps, and dehydration, but none were seriously injured. Tschida said that it was fortunate the ride stopped at a location where the passengers were mostly upright

The riders were removed by bucket. They had to be strapped into their seats individually so they could safely be pulled out one by one.

It is not known what caused the ride to stop, but the Six Flags spokesperson, as quoted by ABC affiliate 13wham.com, says the built-in computerized safety system “performed as it is designed to,” insinuating that computer system was responding to something amiss with the attraction.

The Joker’s Jinx will be closed until the problem has been found and the ride is again deemed safe.

The Joker’s Jinx first opened in 1999, goes from zero to 60 mph in just over three seconds, according to the Six Flags website.
