With the Surface Pro 3 set to launch in 25 new countries on August 28, the new ads suggest Microsoft is serious about challenging Apple.
With the launch of three new ads for its Surface Pro 3 tablet, Microsoft wants to party like it’s the early ‘00s again. But this time, the tables are turned and Microsoft is on the offensive against Apple.
The three new ads are heavily reminiscent of Apple’s classic commercials from the ‘00s, placing the Surface Pro 3 and the MacBook Air head-to-head. Each of the three 30-second spots highlights the touchscreen, pen support, and detachable keyboard of the Surface Pro 3, and targets Apple’s MacBook Air for lacking any of these features. All three ads end with the tagline “The tablet that can replace your laptop.”
A common theme of the three ads is Microsoft’s claim that the Surface Pro 3 is just as fast as the MacBook Air. Both devices boast 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. But with the Surface Pro 3’s detachable keyboard and touchscreen, Microsoft obviously hopes consumers will conclude they can get the benefits of a MacBook and an iPad in one device.
The first spot, tilted “Crowded,” attempts to hammer this point home. A MacBook-using narrator responds to Microsoft’s narrator by showing off his own touchscreen (an iPad), and realizing, “I have a lot of stuff to carry.”
With the Surface Pro 3 set to launch in 25 new countries on August 28, the new ads suggest Microsoft is serious about challenging Apple. Whether they can succeed is another question altogether.
