The two had been married for nine years before their divorce but have remained friendly ever since.
Billy Joel had a touching, nostalgic moment for concert-goers on Thursday night as he sang his 1983 hit Uptown Girl to ex-wife Christie Brinkley, seated in the audience.
The two had been married for nine years before their divorce but have remained friendly ever since, and Joel proved it to all of Madison Square Garden when he serenaded his former wife with the song that first brought them together.
When the song had become a hit back in the 80’s, Joel hired Brinkley, then one of the top models in the industry and an accomplished dancer, to choreograph the dancing for the music video. The two became close during the shoot and married shortly thereafter. They have one daughter together, Alexa.
But things soured over the course of the marriage and they ended up divorcing in 1994. Since then, the song and its association with Brinkley has long been reported to be a sore subject for Joel, but during the August date of his monthly residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the artist appeared to have put those hard feelings to rest.
Joel took to the microphone to sing his 80’s hit, even going through some of the choreography that Brinkley had previously taught him for the video. The singer then waved over his on-stage camera crew to focus on Brinkley, who could be seen smiling in the audience. Massive video screens throughout the arena displayed her laughing and dancing as the crowd cheered.
Brinkley took to Instagram after the song, posting a photo of herself smiling up at her former husband while claiming “He’s still got it!…#nationaltreasure”.
Joel has been performing a monthly residency at the so-called “World’s Most Famous Arena” since December 2013 where he promised to continue doing shows for as long as he could attract sold-out crowds to the famed venue.
